Where we are

We are located on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway touring route and you will find us an ideal base for visiting the best of Northland - from Bay of Islands to Cape Reinga.

Cable Bay is a beautiful pink-coral beach, often with good surf and with a small lagoon and rock pools at the western end and childrens' playground at the east. It was named for the Pacific Telegraph Cable Station (the red route) which operated here between 1902 and 1912, linking New Zealand with Canada, Australia and Norfolk Island. For more information about this area, visit Doubtless Bay Online.

There are one or two daily return flights from Auckland to Kaitaia Airport (about a half hour drive away) and four or five daily return flights to Kerikeri Airport (about 45 minutes drive) operated by Air New Zealand Link. There is a daily bus service to and from Auckland which sets down in front of The Beach Cottage on request. Rental cars at Kaitaia Airport are available from Northland Rentals.
Travelling here by car by the direct route using State Highway 1 and State Highway 10, the journey time from Auckland airport is about four and a half hours without stops. Travelling the Twin Coast Discovery Highway - a world-class touring route leaving from, and returning to, Auckland - requires at least two days in each direction to visit the many interesting and beautiful attractions along the way. Visit Go Northwest for more information. Click for an enlarged view of the map. Northland Map
Coming from Bay of Islands by State Highway 10, pass by the turns for Mangonui, through Coopers Beach and the road then runs immediately along the beach at Cable Bay. The Beach Cottage is immediately before the Cable Bay Dairy on the left hand side. Coming from Awanui on State Highway 10, cross the one-way bridge at Taipa and over the headland and you will see the Cable Bay Dairy on the right. Click for an enlarged view of the map.
